Permanent Full-Time
Reporting to the Public Health Manager, the
Dental Hygienist provides screening, preventive services, and education about oral health to the community in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards and Protocols, and Healthy Smiles Ontario. The Dental Hygienist is responsible for the advocacy, promotion and provision of the oral health program and services.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Communication
- Participate in the development of, and revisions to teaching aids and resources for in-service training and public education
- Prepare required documentation with sufficient clarity, accuracy and level of detail
- Utilize a range of communication methods such as verbal, written and visual that meet the needs of the audience
- Use appropriate communication channels and technology for relating with key individuals, public health partners, dental professionals, clients and stakeholder groups; including the use of appropriate media, social marketing and community resources and platforms
- Deliver oral health hygiene instruction to various groups within the community, including school children
Assessment & Analysis
- Assist in the production of statistics and reports and review the information for program planning purposes
- Provide oral health screening and referrals, including follow-up, case management and periodic reassessments as required
- Collaborate with the dental health educator to provide oral health screenings and the delivery of preventative and restorative oral health programs
- Compile daily, monthly and yearly reports and statistics for oral health programs
- Process client applications and reassessments for oral health program eligibility
- Utilize technology to collect, store and retrieve data
Policy & Program Planning, Implementation & Evaluation
- Participate in the efficient operation of programs through support functions including scheduling clients for preventive agent clinics, packing supplies and assisting with inventory
- Demonstrate awareness of public health programs and regulations
- Participate and contribute to program planning
- Apply established procedures and practices to the oral health program delivery, adapting methods to situations
Partnerships, Collaboration and Advocacy
- Act as a resource person regarding oral health for other public health staff, other health professionals, and the general public
- Develop and maintain necessary relationships and work cooperatively with others
- Strengthen collaboration by keeping others informed and up to date as required

- Participate in initiatives that increase awareness of diversity and equity
- Identify services and programs available to those of diverse backgrounds
Public Health Sciences
- Comply with and provide oral health care within the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO) scope of practice and in accordance with the Ontario Health Standards and Protocols, and Healthy Smiles Ontario
- Apply public health science knowledge to practice

- Review own and other’s work and propose ways to improve efficiency and quality and seek excellence
- Offer creative and innovative ideas for quality improvement to the work area

Organizational and Administrative Duties
Function as a member of the Grey Bruce Health Unit oral health team, and other Health Unit teams
Perform other related duties as assigned
Specific Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Working knowledge of dental hygiene services and programs as outlined in the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO) Dental Hygiene Standards of Practice
- Ability to communicate information, ideas and opinions clearly, effectively and appropriately both internally and externally
- Ability to build effective relationships both internally and externally
- Committed to acquire and maintain the knowledge and skills to meet the Public Health core competencies
- Working knowledge of electronic medical records and other Ministry recording systems (e.g. OHISS)
- Demonstrated organization and planning skills
- Specific knowledge of Health Unit communication systems and appropriate computer software
- Proven ability to work independently with competency and accuracy and as a member of an interdisciplinary team
- Committed to a safe and healthy work environment for both employees and clients
Employment Requirements
Education - Training - Experience
- Dental Hygiene Diploma from a recognized Community College
- Current registration, and a member in good standing, with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario
- Two (2) years’ experience in the dental hygiene field is preferred
- Entitled to practice as a self-initiated Dental Hygienist
- Experience in public health is preferred
- Current First Aid and CPR certification
Working Conditions
- Working hours will vary within a 35-hour paid work week; with evening and weekend work as required, or as agreed to within the Collective Agreement
- Work will be completed in both general office and community settings that provide oral health programs
- Business travel is required within the Grey Bruce Region
- A valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is required
