Permanent Full-Time


The Health Promoter plans, develops, implements, and evaluates a variety of community-based initiatives to meet the Ontario Public Health Standards. This includes applying leadership skills to support effective program delivery, advocacy, and policy development. 

Key Areas of Responsibility

Communication

  • In collaboration with program manager, communications coordinator, and colleagues, develop and implement communication strategies, identify appropriate distribution channels, develop targeted messages and monitor effectiveness of campaigns.
  • Prepare media releases and articles, participate in radio and television interviews, coordinate and participate in special promotional events, and coordinate and recommend distribution of marketing materials.
  • Plan, organize and conduct educational workshops, in-services and presentations for staff, community groups, municipal councils, schools, workplaces and provincial or national networks.
  • Demonstrate understanding of how various issues influence the health and well-being of priority populations within the community. 


Assessment and Analysis

  • Collect, assess and analyze evidence-based research regarding the factors which promote and protect the health of local residents. Integrate information from a variety of sources to describe the range of interventions available to address public health issues.
  • Identify community assets and resources that will support the appropriate mix of evidence-based health promotion strategies including community mobilization, health education, awareness building, skill development, advocacy, policy development and environmental supports. 


Policy and Program Planning, Implementation and Evaluation

  • Participate in the planning, development, coordination, monitoring, and evaluation of evidence-based programming. Support the development of operational plans, and implementation once approved.
  • Analyze healthy public policy options to understand the health, economic, administrative, legal, social and political implications. Draft recommendations and implementation plans. Write and present resolutions and position papers. 
  • Prepare comments, advice and make recommendations for local, regional and provincial reviews, reports and policies, including all levels of strategic, master and land use planning. Identify and maintain familiarity with local, provincial, and federal policies that mandate and influence local planning and decision making. 


Partnership, Collaboration and Advocacy

  • Familiar with all aspects of the Health Unit as a whole, and link community stakeholders to appropriate Health Unit programs and services.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local, regional and provincial partners, planners, and decision makers.
  • Facilitate and support the development of community networks and partnerships.
  • Work in conjunction with other agencies and services to collaborate on the development of comprehensive health promotion strategies.   


Public Health Sciences

  • Demonstrate knowledge in areas of health promotion and population health, including the social determinants of health, health equity, and health promotion models, frameworks and evidence-informed decision-making.
  • Take responsibility for learning and professional development by attending appropriate continuing education workshops, conferences and seminars, through private study and participation in networks.
  • Use data, tools and frameworks in evidence-informed decision-making and continuous quality improvement. 


Leadership

  • Provide support and expertise in areas of health promotion and population health to peers, community stakeholders, and the public.
  • Act as facilitator, chair and/or project manager on internal and external committees as required. 
  • Build internal capacity for health promotion by sharing knowledge and supporting staff learning and skill development. 
  • Understand and articulate the mission and priorities of Grey Bruce Public Health


Employment Requirements

Education - Training - Experience

  • Master's degree in public health/health promotion or related field; or four-year (4) Baccalaureate degree in health studies/sciences or related field and two (2) years related experience.
  • A demonstrated knowledge of the key values and principles underlying health promotion practice, health status of populations, inequalities in health, and the determinants of health.
  • Strong communication, presentation, facilitation, and engagement skills.
  • Knowledge of current public health issues, professional standards, core competencies, procedures, and legislation. 


Working Conditions

  • Working hours will vary within a 35-hour paid work week; evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Work will be completed in both general office and community settings.
  • Occasional business travel required within and outside of the Grey Bruce region.
  • A valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is required.


The current wage scale for the position of Health Promoter is $33.40 to $41.02 per hour.
