The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has announced plans to modernize services for the charitable sector, signaling a continued shift toward digital service delivery and online account management. While no implementation date has been announced, charities may eventually be required to file their annual T3010 Registered Charity Information Return online rather than through paper submissions.
The CRA has also completed the retirement of its fax services for the Charities Directorate. As of April 1, 2026, charities can no longer submit documents or requests to the Charities Directorate by fax and are encouraged to use online services instead.
For many charities, especially smaller organizations and long-established faith-based groups, the transition to online services could present challenges. To access online filing and other CRA digital services, charities must have access to their CRA MyBusiness Account. In many cases, organizations have outdated records with the CRA, resulting in signing authorities who are no longer serving on the board or, in some instances, are no longer living.
Another important consideration is CRA correspondence. Charities that register for MyBusiness Account are automatically enrolled in electronic mail and will not be able to receive paper mail unless a RC681 is submitted to CRA.
While there is currently no deadline for mandatory online filing, charities are encouraged to review their CRA account access now and confirm that board members, directors, trustees, and authorized representatives are up to date.
What charities should do now:
- Confirm who currently has authorized access to the charity’s CRA account.
- Update directors, trustees, and signing authorities with the CRA if records are outdated.
- Obtain access to My Business Account before online services become mandatory.
- Review communication preferences and determine whether paper mail should be maintained.
- Familiarize staff and Board members with CRA’s online services.
By taking these steps now, charities can avoid potential disruptions and be better prepared for future changes as the CRA continues its digital modernization efforts.
